Chapter 10

Planning

Gennover Empire

They arrived at their base camp after an eight-hour horseback journey, where they were greeted by Kristi, Elaine, and several knights. Ramiel helped Victoria walk, and Kristi and Elaine gave a curtsy to her.

“Everyone, this is Victoria, Princess of the Gennover Empire and the Holy Commander of the Imperial Army,” Ramiel announced.

“Do you feel alright, princess?” Kristi asked.

“Yes, I am fine. Thanks to Ramiel and these lords and a lady who came to help me.”

Ramiel then officially introduced her to each one of them.

“Victoria, this is Sir Alonzo Tremish. A mage also known as the Dark Knight.”

“Isn’t that Dark Knight who—” Victoria asked.

“Yes, the one you’ve always heard about,” Ramiel interrupted.

“Not that much.” Tre bowed his head respectfully.

Loretta was instantly curious and wondered what stories Victoria was talking about. Loretta knew very little about Tre, and that bothered her sometimes. She was always trying to figure out more about him, to try and understand what he was doing, where he was coming from with things.

Maybe before they left she would have a chance to speak with Victoria? That would be nice. If Victoria could tell Loretta some of the tales that surrounded Tre, then maybe she would be able to figure things out.

After briefly introducing his handmaids, Ramiel introduced Bill and Crooks, gesturing to each man in turn. Bill gave a big smile and waved. Crooks gave a fake curtsy.

Victoria nodded, laughing lightly. “Nice to meet you.”

“Here’s Lady Loretta. A noble from Leory and the follower of Sir Tremish.”

Loretta gave a curtsy. She knew that she didn’t look much like a noble at the moment.

Her hair was a tangled mess from being in the ocean, and her clothing was dirty and torn from running through the forest, her skin scraped wherever it had been exposed.

She didn’t look remotely noble, actually, and she kept her eyes down, feeling entirely overshadowed by Victoria’s natural beauty.

Shyly, when she felt no one was looking, Loretta attempted to slide her fingers through her hair, trying to untangle one of the larger knots. When it wouldn’t come out easily, she simply tucked the entire thing behind her ear.

“Thank you for helping me again, milady. You are a noble of Leory?” Victoria asked with interest.

“Yes, Your Highness,”

“Traveling this far must be tiring.”

“It’s been very tiring, but the journey has not been all bad. It’s allowed me to meet these kind men, and now it’s allowed me to meet you as well.”

Loretta fell back onto what she knew from her time in the courts, making sure to speak properly to make up for her bedraggled appearance. She might not have looked to be a princess just then, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t speak and act like one.

Ramiel announced, “We’ll be leaving immediately. The rebels must know by now what’s happened and will soon follow. We had better hurry and move Victoria far from here. We’ll hide in the forest first and leave the border of Gennover as soon as we can.”

What a journey. Loretta sighed. It hadn’t been a bad one, of course.
